Broadband internet access is vital in helping bridge geographical distances that have separated us from Canada’s remote aboriginal communities for far too long. I’m glad our party has not failed to recognize this.
Broadband internet, particularly in the north, is definitely a priority for infrastructure development.
Whereas many infrastructure projects will provide short term employment, unless the project encourages fixed capital formation in the supply chain it does not necessarily lead to permanent jobs and economic growth. Extending internet access into remote locations, particularly the north, will result in fixed capital formation in the supply chain. This enhances the long term comparatives of the businesses in the supply chain. Investment in advanced technology encourage private sector innovation. Investment in broadband internet is good not only for the domestic market, but also in the long run good for export of Canadian technology.
Taxpayer money spent on this will be recovered through economic growth.
I support this resolution.
Ha, I wouldn’t call what we have in the cities broadband. If you are lucky you can get service from one provider. I guess that’s better than nothing, but it’s not really good enough.
It is a dumb idea for government to get involved in this, hover noble it is as an idea. Let the technology catch up with the intent. I guarrentee that by the time the billions are spent to do this many years down the road there will be a technical solution implementable at a very small fraction of the price.
This is not the right resolution re broadband and internet and probably why it does not rate as priority. We ALL need fast, inexpensive, reliable service like they have in Germany where the government has made it a priority and has the will to regulate providers. Our economic and research futures depend on it. Also applies to cell phones.
It seems to me that it should be the “internet companies” who have to furnish the infrastructure so that every Canadian has access to broadband internet. They are the ones making the money therefore they should provide the facilities.
Perhaps someone can find out if this was the case way back when the telephone system was originally introduced in Canada. I think it was Bell that built the phone lines, not the Canadian government.
As an Internet Service Provider nk.ca I have to say unless the corporate oligarchy is broken , we will have less than adequate serve and competitions.
I would like to offer my customers 100MBs Internet Full-Duplex up and down. To deliver to the custer, the costs would be in the thousands of dollars.
