As somebody who has spent a long time living overseas, and not always in stable, friendly countries, I have to support this resolution. However, perhaps adding “without interfering in the legal and/or cultural institutions of the host country”.

    I strongly support this resolution.
Canadians are and should be proud to be citizens of their country. Strong and intense protection of Canadian citizen’s rights aborad is a MUST. If your government does not respect your citizenship, other countries will not.

I strongly support this resolution. The Harper Conservatives have let Canadians down by not supporting their needs when it is justified. They have adopted a very inequitable approach by helping some Canadians in some situations and not others, based largely on Ministerial prerogative and – in some cases – conservative ideological perception. This resolution couold be improved by calling for consular services to be provided ob statutary authority – ie by removing it from Ministerial prerogative and ensuring that the Canadian government helps all Canadians in all situations, ie in a fair and equitable manner.

The concern about local laws or institutions is not a real problem as this is governed by the Vienna Convention on Consular Affairs.

I support this .. but why is this not a motion from the Liberal Party of Canada, not only the Young Liberals of Canada?

Canada must continue to be a strong advocate of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the ICC and the responsibility to protect (R2P). As a young Liberal that has lived abroad for many years there are many areas that we can improve on. This resolution supports this and I will vote in favor.

This Conservative government are clueless when it comes to the idea of citizenship.
